Kindergarten Newsletter - January 2008
We hope you all had an exciting yet relaxing vacation and that you have a happy and healthy new year. Thank you for making our Holiday Luncheon a success. Wasn’t it wonderful to be able to sit down and enjoy your children and the other families? It is one of our favorite times of the year. We enjoy seeing everyone looking so relaxed and cheerful. Without you and your delicious contributions we could not have had such a wonderful repast. Thank you again for being such a sharing, caring and generous group.
We are excited to be back at school and have many plans for the upcoming months.
The Human Body
We have begun a unit on the human body. We will discuss the major systems of our bodies, talk about our five senses and will discuss the new food pyramid and what choices we can make for healthy eating and exercise. Please help us by packing a nutritious lunch that includes all 5 food groups (protein, dairy, fruit, vegetables, grains) and a little of the fat or sweet group.
Children age 5 or 6 should plan to eat between 4 and 6 ounces of grain, 1.5 to 2.5 cups of veggies, 1 to 2.5 cups of fruit, 2 to 3 cups of dairy, 3 to 5 ounces of meat or beans and around 4 teaspoons of fat per day. These numbers vary due to the amount of physical activity your child engages in. Please visit www.mypyramid.gov for more information about the new pyramid guidelines.
Reading Corner
The author of the month is Jan Brett, a Massachusetts resident, who has written such books as "The Mitten" and "Trouble with Trolls". We have begun reading "Search for the Missing Bones", a Magic School Bus chapter book.
Charitable Project
We thank you again for supporting our charitable project. The children were very proud of the clothing items they were able to purchase for underprivileged children. Without your help we would never have been so successful. Thanks!
Winter
We will also discuss winter and the changes we see. We will talk about our area wild animals and which ones migrate, hibernate or adapt because of our cold New England winters.
Progress Reports
At the end of January we will be sending home progress reports. Please look for them. Although we will be suggesting that you come in for a conference please remember that you can talk with us in person or by phone any time. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns.
Winter Clothing
Please remember to continue to send in appropriate clothing for outside play. If your child would like to bring in slippers to wear during the day they are welcome to. If they have an extra pair they could leave them at school during this snowy season. That way they would always have something to put on their feet after they remove their boots.
